The adidas Manchester Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the United Kingdom and one of the most important running events in Europe. Held since 2012, it brings together tens of thousands of runners and hundreds of thousands of spectators every year. The race starts beside Old Trafford, the famous home of Manchester United, and finishes on Oxford Road, outside the University of Manchester. The course leads through Stretford, Sale, Timperley and Altrincham before returning to the city centre. It is among the flattest in the country, with only about 54 m of total elevation, which is why it attracts runners chasing personal bests. Cheering crowds along the whole route and a six-hour time limit make the race accessible to first-time marathoners as well.
