The Abbott Longford Marathon, known as "Ireland's friendliest marathon", has been held since 2002 in the very heart of the country, in County Longford. The start and finish are on Main Street, by the Longford Arms Hotel, and the flat course runs through the scenic countryside of three counties, Longford, Roscommon and Leitrim, alongside the River Shannon. The race is run entirely by volunteers, organised by runners for runners, with all proceeds supporting the local charity St. Christopher's Services. The weekend features a marathon, a half marathon, a 63.4 km ultramarathon, a team relay and a 5K, making it a great tune-up race ahead of the Dublin City Marathon in the autumn.
